330. LILIATH’S FAMILY REUNION
Caravans and wagons that were in line had been forced to the side to clear out a path. An argument could be seen between a duo of knights and a gaudy looking merchant.. with his slaves.
We passed through the gates, the knights that saluted us before soon backed into formation. Our carriage made its way through the commoner’s district.
“Interesting,” muttered a girl with flowy velvet hair. Liliath Bougainvillea, my soon to be wife or.. she might already be my wife. We’ve already completed the Kiss of Blood after all.
Liliath stared out the window, at the buildings of her hometown.
Though I’ve only gotten a glimpse of what Toren Kingdom looked like back from the vision Bleu showed me. I’m not all that familiar with this place myself.
One thing I do know is that it’s quite colourful.
Trees of green and pink growing along the street, fantastic structures spaced out between each other, the streets spacious enough for carriages to pass whilst leaving space for the pedestrians. The roads were made of grey slabs, the crevices were filled with gravel.
Buildings were painted in fantasy colours, louvered wooden windows, and what looked like newly built lighting systems all around the streets.
This was Toren Kingdom.
I wonder what Liliath must be feeling?
Putting aside the beauty of the place, the streets were filled with people welcoming our arrival. Some prostrated, others waving flags. There were even those screaming out His Highness’ name in delirium. His Highness Kyoshi.. that is. Was he waving to the crowd in front? I don’t know.
I mean, why wouldn’t they? The caravans we were part of were so gaudy and royal, it literally marks the return of the ambassador.
“The academy is still in operation.”
“What? Academy?” I looked out the window, where Liliath was pointing.
I saw people around my age wearing something that resembled uniforms.
It’s been 3 weeks since we departed from Erudite Kingdom, along the way we dropped by towns or camped out in the wilderness. There were a few times where wildlife attacked us, but they didn’t pose too much of a problem. Not when we have Teal and Liliath around.
Teal? Teal is the hero elf who has been in service for more than 7 cycles, this being her 8th.
“I’ve never been here before. Liliath.. you said you were a princess here?” her voice was strained. Sitting in the same carriage on the other side was a girl with grey-white hair. This was Rinalanshina, or Rin in short. You could say that I’ve decided to make her my second wife..
Fucking hell don’t judge me!
Ugh.. this must be the worst introduction ever.
“I might no longer be recognized as one. It will depend on father,” Liliath said, her hand tightened around mine.
Let me shift the topic. It’s getting depressing.
“No propaganda posters huh.”
“Propaganda posters?”
“I was thinking if there really was a clash between the pro-demons and anti-demons, wouldn’t setting up large banners to advertise the advantage of one side compared to the others be useful?”
Liliath thought about my suggestion.
I’m not sure if posters could actually help but.. if you read world history, the Japanese people had used this tactic to dominate Singapore and all regions surrounding it back in the day.
“I will bring it up to my brother.”
“What’s that?” Rin pointed to the sky.
I had to tilt my head to get a good look.. those are wyvern riders. Practice rounds I’m guessing? Like how you’d see jets pass overhead in the modern world. They need to train if not their skills will get rusty, that kind of thing.
“I’m nervous. Dear, could you hold my hand.”
“Alright.”
I held Liliath’s hand. It didn’t show on her face, but she was trembling. Her hands were cold and slightly sweaty.
“It’s going to be alright. It always has.. right?” Rin tried to console Liliath in her own way.
“We can only hope so.. can we now dear?” Liliath said with a voice tinged with worry.
“Yeah..”
Something will happen. There’s no doubt about it.
We almost came into contact with Javiel during the trip to Toren Kingdom. It’s a mystery why he didn’t come for us, and instead, just watched as his plans crumbled.
Of course, it’s possible to keep track of his every move if I used [God’s Eyes] all day, but that just isn’t practical.
“Will my sister be alright..”
“Last time we checked, she was working as a clerk in the demon tower right?”
Although we call it the demon tower, it’s basically just a structure where Javiel get’s his administrative duties done. It’s not some dungeon alright? You can literally walk in the building like how you would a guild and be receptioned.
As we spent our time pointing out the interesting things we saw, the carriage soon made its way into the open royal courtyard. We stopped at the front entrance.
“We’ve arrived,” Rin pressed her fingers on the glass window.
Liliath took in a deep breath, and exhaled.
“You’ll be alright.” I patted Liliath’s head.
“Thank you dear. Give some love to Rin to if that’s alright.”
“Oh right. Sorry about that.”
I did the same to Rin, she blushed. How cute.
There were people already waiting to attend us. The door to the carriage was opened, on the other side was a young male butler. Brown hair, bob haircut.
He looked at me, then when his gaze met Liliath’s.. he faltered a few steps backwards. A look of disbelief plastered all across his face.
“Regan-kun, it’s been a while,” Liliath said with a graceful smile.
“No way.. Y-Your Highness Liliath-sama?!”
Vegan? No, I mean, Regan? What the fuck?
===
“If it’s alright, could you send everyone to her room? I’ll explain to father and mother about the situation. As it stands now. I don’t want the confusion to spread.”
“As you wish your Highness..” the elderly maid bowed stiffly at his command.
“I take it that you’ll keep what you’ve seen here a secret until it is announced as official through the royal channels.” Prince Kyoshi of Toren Kingdom, also Liliath’s brother. Chestnut coloured hair, and irises. He’s super tall and has a very gentle look on his face. Most girls would swoon for him.
“How about me?”
Except for Her Highness Siesta. A princess from Erudite Kingdom which.. in her own words, was sold away by her own family to become the wife of another kingdom’s prince– that’s just.. unfortunate.
If you ask me who’d I support, it would be Her Highness Siesta. Kyoshi is still suspicious on my radar.
Platinum blonde hair tied into a neat bun, her emerald eyes were like polished gems. Today, she’s wearing a nice blue puffy dress adorned with minimal accessories. Simple charms, basically.
“You’ll have to accompany me. His Majesty and my mother would like to meet you.”
“Very well,” thought Siesta said so with a smile, I can’t help but feel something like bloodlust emanate from her body. I wonder what she’ll do to break this engagement? Can’t wait to find out.
We were led by a few maids up the confusingly winding castle. Though, it seems Liliath remembers the layout of the castle as she walked ahead. Every now and then, she would cock her head and point out things that had changed from the last time she came here.
It definitely wasn’t as extravagant when compared to Erudite kingdom’s castle, though, it’s probably beyond what most commoners in this world could experience.
“Excuse me, who are you?”
“Me?”
The young butler, Regan nodded.
“I’m Liliath’s fiance.”
His expression crumbled. Oh, I see where this is going.
“What’s your relationship with Liliath? You two are familiar with each other?”
“That.. I was her attendant once.”
Liliath had an attendant? That’s news to me.
“I see. No wonder.”
“Excuse my ignorance, having asked that question,” He bowed, then retreated. He’s still tagging behind us though.
“Noel..” Rin called out, a concerned expression on her face. I could tell her concerns from her gaze alone.
“Not that I’m too worried, more like.. I pity him?”
“Dear, where would you like to visit after this?” the bouncy Liliath came over and asked.
“We were told to hole up in the room for a bit weren't we?”
“Sneaking out without being caught wouldn’t be a problem now, would it?” out of the blue, Liliath leaned against my body and whispered into my ears.
“Right..”
This was Liliath’s castle. She’s probably familiar with the method for doing so.
“We’ll take Rin along too. I have many things I want to show you,” Liliath jumped away and showed me a bubbly smile.
“Roger that. You win,” I raised both my hands in arrest.
Liliath’s eyes shifted behind me. There wasn’t a need to turn around to figure out her intentions.
Sorry Regan, the Liliath you knew from the past is no more.
331.
We got to Liliath room. Surprisingly, everything was covered in white cloth.
The maids paled at the sight, quickly working to turn the room back into a livable space.
“This is quite a big room.”
“Having such a luxury with no one to share it with, it’s lonely being all alone in such a large space,” Liliath said.
“Ah, let me help carry that–”
As Rin herself was a maid once, she began helping the others. The sooner we get the place cleaned up, the sooner we can rest. Since Liliath and I were also free, we lent a hand despite the chaos of nos. Liliath didn’t have too much trouble commanding the maids to give up permission to do what we shouldn’t.
Buckets, dusters, brooms, mops. A flurry of movements, maids organizing themselves into a magical concert. In no time at all, the one abandoned room turned shiny and sparkly.
A bed, a desk with journals laid scrambled on top. Shelves with numerous books, closets filled with dresses.
“One more,” Liliath pointed to the ceiling.
The dull coloured chandelier and crystal lights cover with dust, cobwebs growing in the corner of the room.
“W-We shall get right to it..”
“No need.”
Poof, dust rained down from above, but before it touched my head, Liliath balled them together and gently had it float its way on top of the duster.
“Thank you very much for the help,” Liliath said to the maid in-charge with an elegant smile. The maid was too stunned to respond.
“Um..”
“P-Pardon me. Please feel free to call us if there is anything you need, Your Highness Liliath, we will seek to do our best in our abilities to accommodate your request. You must be tired from the long journey, we shall leave for Your Highness to rest,” she quickly bowed, retiring from the room promptly. The other maids and butler followed suit.
Except one.
“Your magic.. has grown so much from the last time I saw it..” Regan said in a shaky voice.
“That’s not the case. It’s merely my control that has improved. That asides, nothing much has changed.”
“That part about you never changes..” he replied with a stiff smile. Bowing, he finally left.
The sound of the door clicking shut, the tension on my shoulders loosened a bit.
This place was just like how I saw it in the vision Bleu showed me of when Liliath was still a child. It was the scene playing out where her family was debating whether or not to kill her.
“Can I lie on your bed, Liliath?” Rin asked, sliding the fingers across the silk linen.
“It’s our bed Rin. Feel free to use it as you please..”
Rin’s face turned beet red. I wanted to retort but couldn’t find any words to say when I met Liliath’s sly gaze.
“What?” I asked.
“Is Noel jealous?”
Jealous? Me? “Probably not..”
Liliath chuckled. “I’d like to see what dear would do if he became jealous.”
“You better not..” I warned.
“I digress. I wouldn’t want dear to be taken away by a vixen too after all,” Liliath stepped up in front of me. She opened up her arms to me, as if a child wanting to be soothed.
“Yeah, yeah.” I embraced her.
We twirled on the spot for a bit, our bodies stuck closely together. Her warmth and scent made me reluctant to part.
“Should we rest or should we explore? I’m slightly drained from having cleaned up the place,” Liliath asked with a soft exhale.
“N-Noel..” Rin called out from the bed.
“Yes..”
“Um..”
“I know, I know.”
“We shall rest for a period, I suppose.”
I went to the bed and cuddled Rin. Not the first time I’ve done it, but it’s embarrassing no matter how many times we’ve done it. It always ends with faces barely inches apart, at a distance where I could feel her breath. By this point, Rin would normally falter, her face would turn red and.. she would turn to escape from my grasp.
This time around, she just stared at me. I was totally enamored by her desperately shy expression. Her face was redder than a tomato, her body edgy and quivering , but eyes were implying something else.
I closed the distance and our lips touched. Her body convulse like an electric current had just run through her body.
I leaned away..
It became apparent that Rin fainted on the spot.
“R..Rin? Hello? Earth to Rin–”
“She must be exhausted. Dear, I think you should let her rest.”
I sat up. Rin looked like she was absolutely drunk though.
“I guess so..”
“We too, should get some rest dear. What will come after this still remains uncertain,” Liliath said in a tone lower than her usual voice.
“I agree,” I carried Rin’s body and laid her properly on the bed.
“She’s pretty,” Liliath stroked Rin’s forehead.
“You think?”
“Of course I think so. My dear chose her after all.”
“Hey, what happened to you deciding to bring Rin into our family in the first place?”
“Did that ever happen?” Liliath looked into the air with a finger to her chin. Even now, I still have no idea if she’s doing it on purpose or that she actually lost that part of her memories. It’s probably the latter, but the way she acts just makes it seem dubious.
Liliath crawled up beside Rin.
“Wake me up when someone arrives Noel.”
“Okay.”
Liliath closed her eyes.
I watched as she fell asleep.
Huh? Hold up.
I thought she said we should all rest– why did I become the one keeping watch?!
===
“Demon lords don’t need sleep,” Liliath said as she yawned.
“Yeah right..” hell, that’s convincing.
“Hehe,” Liliath poked my cheeks with her fingers.
It’s a known fact that demon lords don’t need sleep. But fatigue is still a real thing, okay? Fortunately Teal broke into the room just as I began to fret, so I had her wake me up in case someone besides her tried to double-break into the room.
Just kidding, I didn’t sleep in. I kept an eye out on my brother-in-law’s movements. He talked with the king, the queen. Her Highness Siesta kept her beautifully crafted fake smile on her the whole time. It’s so obvious, anyone could tell she was twitching.
Seriously though, should we be doing something to stop the engagement? I get that I’m on Siesta’s side but.. separating my brother-in-law’s lover from him is.. cruel, don’t you think so?
In any case, Liliath, Rin and I made our way to the dinning hall to attend dinner.
More like.. a grand surprise? I’m slightly worried though as it’s not like there weren't any orange markers in the castle. More than a dozen.
“Wait, the timing isn’t right,” Teal paused us.
We could hear chattering beyond the door.
“Fascinating, truly. What would be father’s reaction when he see’s me? I can’t wait,” Liliath was laughing, it sounded kind of hysterical.
Hysterical..
She’s masking her fear.
I reached over and held Liliath’s shaking hand.
“D-Dear..”
“I’m here, Rin’s here too.”
Rin nodded resolutely.
“I-I’m fine,” Liliath said with a strained smile, an expression that sounded like two personalities.
I don’t know why, but I feel like there’s a clue here on how I could return Liliath back to how she was.. no. I shouldn’t.
What’s the point of going back?
“On my mark,” Teal said in a hushed tone. “Two..”
The door was pushed open.
A mysterious force seemed to drag us into the room.
Around the table filled with lavish dishes were Kyoshi alongside Siesta, the King, Queen, a prince I didn’t recognize and two princesses.
Akihito, His Majesty.
Georgia the Second, Her Majesty.
Kana, the first princess.
Linda, the second princess
Takahashi, the second prince.
Just the few new people here is making my head spin. How many siblings did Liliath say she had again? 4 brothers and 4 sisters including her?
The king dropped his fork.
Everyone’s gaze directed this way.
With a smile that seemed to blossom like a spring flower, Liliath curtsied.
“Father, step mother, anee-samas and onii-samas. How have you all been?”
“Father, mother,” Kyoshi called out.
“L-Liliath-chan..” the person who became the first to let out a disbelieving voice was the blonde haired empress, Georgia the Second.
“No way..”
“Where have you been all this time?!”
“Don’t forget that she’s a demon!”
The dining table broke into a small schism.
Siesta looked my way and flashed an expression of doubt and confusion. Was there something we’re missing here?
“Silence!!”
A hush fell over the hall, the king stood up from his seat.
He walked over to us. First he sized me up, my father-in-law (possibly) was a little taller than me. Then he looked towards Rin. Lastly, his eyes met Liliath.
“My daughter.. your father is really.. really sorry.”
He knelt to the ground and lowered his head, his red cloak spread across the ground. Liliath just stood there, I didn’t know how to describe her expression– pure shock?
Mana began to thicken around Liliath, my instincts were beginning to blare.
“Your Majesty, please step away from her now..” I quickly pried them apart.. or tried to.
“W-Who are you?” he looked at me fiercely.
The density of mana grew denser. Rin’s expression also warped at the realization.
“I’m her fiance– now get away from her!”
I quickly pulled her into my arms.
The density of mana became stagnant.
“Sorry,” I said. I wasn’t sure if it was directed towards the king, or Liliath.
“Father, pardon my solicit, I believe it would be wise to listen to his words. As someone who understands her more than any of us do, we wouldn’t know what would be the result if something happened,” Kyoshi said.
“Is that really Liliath-chan? I thought she died?”
“She’s definitely our sister, how dare you say something so obtrusive!”
“Liliath, are you alright?” I stroked her. It was as if Liliath passed out standing. Her pupils were dull, shaking, lips were quivering.
Rin came over and put her hands on her shoulders.
“Why..” Liliath muttered. “Why. Why. Why. Why. Why..”
The mana in the air became chaotic once again. I had the Teleporatationwidget ready alongside a few skills to enhance my reaction speed as a safety measure. I didn’t know what Liliath was trying to do, but it definitely wasn’t something that wouldn’t result in destruction by this point.
“Forgive me,” the king lowered his head again.
Liliath snuggled closer to my chest, I heard her sobs. I stroked her back.
“Give her a moment.. just give her some time. Just like everyone here, it must’ve been a shock.” I said with as calm of a voice as I could. In truth, I’m panicking at the still rising density of mana. There was no spell in the magic column that could lower the surrounding mana.
It’s like a ticking time bomb.
“Noel.. I can’t.. I don’t want this..”
I stroked her back, she pushed herself closer.
“I want to go back. I don’t care anymore. I don’t want to be part of this family anymore. I don’t want to.. hurt anyone..”
“You’re hurting no one. And I’m still here, I won't leave you.” I pulled her hair over her ears and whispered.
“Ugh.. my head.. it hurts..”
The surrounding mana spiked to a dangerous level. This was the threshold– no more.
I pressed the button.
Out to the open field outside the palace at the Elven Territory. It was pitch black, the meager light around us came from the palace in the background and glowing ambers from the floor.
With the surrounding mana back to a normal level, Liliath fell limp, like strings having cut loose. I held her up to prevent her from falling.
‘Teal, take care of Rin for a bit.’
‘What’s going on there?’
“Noel. What’s going on? What happened to me?”
“You’re fine Liliath, you’re fine.”
“I.. want to know what happened to me. I feel weird,” Liliath laughed weakly.
“Whatever you become, you’ll still be Liliath to me. Don’t worry about it.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Then let’s go back.”
“Are you sure?”
“I think.. I can handle it.. if you’re with me, Noel.”
“Alright..?”
Is it just me or did… Liliath changed again?
332.
Dinner in the dining hall was quiet.
Liliath return and held a proper greeting with everyone this time. She answered a few question, but for the most part, avoided topics that she wasn’t inclined to talk about.
“This is just how I remembered it,” Liliath said, slicing into a piece of crisp tortilla with meat fillings. Wasn’t too sure where the recipe came from, what’s important is that it tastes good.
“Pardon me Noel,” the second prince, Takahashi, who sat beside me asked, “You’re a demon lord yourself?”
“Yeah. The three of us are demon lords,” referring to Rin who was struggling to maintain her etiquette as she kept peeking at Liliath, trying to mimic her. I’ll paste that skill into her status.. there.
“I take it that you’re.. different from that Demon Lord Javiel?”
I saw Liliath’s movements pause.
“Don’t lump us together into one,” she said in a piercing cold tone.
“I apologize for that,” Takahashi expressed in a nonchalant manner.
“You saved our sister from the demon lord right?” the first princess, Kana asked with sparkling eyes.
“Isn’t it odd how a demon lord saved our little princess from another demon lord,” Linda, the second princess added.
“That’s why I’m curious. What kind of person is this demon lord who saved Liliath-chan.”
“The world creator.”
“Pardon?”
“Liliath, I think that isn’t something you can just say openly.”
“It’s the truth..” Liliath’s words tapered off mid way, and a pensive expression clouded her face. She turned to father, “Father, how is mother?””
“She..” he struggled to find the words, “She’s not been in a good condition since you left.”
“I would like to be granted permission to enter the inner courtyard to meet her, would that be allowed?”
“My dear Liliath, what are you saying? Does something like this require my permission?”
“I’ve casted away the kingdom name, Toren. I’m but an ex-princess by this point,”
“Says who?” Georgia the second interrupted, “Your obstinate nature hasn’t changed from when I remembered it. It may be a virtue to be steadfast and unyielding in your decision, however, too much of it will solidify judgement of others, and yourself.”
“I will take that to heart,” Liliath replied in annoyance.
“All father needs to do is grant you the title of duke and you can continue to live as a princess, even if you have a husband of..” Kana said as if hinting.
The king coughed a few times.
“I will prepare the ceremony if that is what you want, Liliath-chan.”
“I’m happy for the offer, but I see no need for that.”
Those in the hall were taken aback, except Siesta, Rin and Teal. Teal looked pitiful standing in the corner watching us eat. Can someone tell the others that we have not a white elephant, but a nuke in the room? Teal is a level 900 hero worthy of a warm reception you know?
Nevermind. I’ll just gift her something later to make up for it. Maybe some ice cream sandwich.
“May I know the reason?”
“I’ll be leaving from here, inevitably. There’s no reason to keep assets of this world that holds no worth in the other world.”
“Other world?”
“Did I forget to mention that Noel came from a world similar to the world of the heroes?” Liliath sounded super proud.
“Is that true?” Takahashi asked, astonished.
I nodded
“I don’t believe you,” Kana pouted.
“No matter. It doesn’t concern me one bit. Think of it as a passing remark,” Liliath said, placing another bite of food in her mouth.
“But he was able to use some odd teleport ability. Doesn’t that count as a Unique Skill only heroes possess?” whispered Linda.
“You could be right. Though, Liliath-chan’s fiance admitted that he’s a demon lord, didn’t he?”
“Liliath,” Rin called.
“Yes, Rin?”
“What do I do if.. I can’t finish this..” she stared at the remaining food on her plate.
“Is something the matter?”
“You know.. I don’t have an appetite,” Rin said with a difficult laugh, patting her abdomen.
“I see. Then I’ll help you with your portion.”
“Liliath-chan, could it be that you’re sharing your fiance with another girl?” Kana asked.
“Yes. why?”
“No way..”
“That means..”
The two princesses turned to me, their eyes lit up like birds of prey.

Don’t kings have duties?
That’s something I wanted to ask.
As you know, fantasy can sometimes be different from reality. Or maybe nobody knows what in the world goes on inside the palace of the medieval time emperors.
At least, from what I’m seeing, His Majesty Akihito had more filial devotion compared to His Majesty from Erudite Kingdom.
The inner courtyard was filled with flowers and trees. A kilometer wide open space broken upon in the center of the castle to allow light to shine in. Mansions were built inside this courtyard, most of them were kept in good condition, but it doesn’t look like there’s anyone staying in them.
For a moment I thought the royalty of Toren Kingdom owned a larger piece of land as compared to Erudite Kingdom. But when I thought about how Erudite kingdom had an entire yard of wilderness where the hero summoning circle was, I changed my mind.
Hm.. which reminds me. There should be a summoning circle in Toren Kingdom too, shouldn’t there?
We stepped past the low gate. Small lights in the dark illuminated the small vegetable garden out in front. The lonely ebony door stood out from this idyllic scene of a white mansion.
His Majesty walked up to the door and knocked.
The door opened, the maid who did so showed a surprised expression, quickly bowing to show respect.
“Where’s Marilyn?”
“Your Majesty, she’s in the kitchen.”
“Could you ask her if she would allow me to enter? I have an important matter which needs her presence.”
“I will try to persuade her,” The maid showed a stiff expression, bowling again, she went inside.
“What happened?” Liliath asked in concern.
“Many things my dear Liliath.. your father was wrong for making that decision.”
“I.. I see..” Liliath looked to the ground.
Some conflict happened between Liliath’s parents huh? That’s kind of.. depressing.
This time around, we didn’t bring Rin as.. doing so might be slightly distasteful. I learnt my lesson.. my two sister-in-laws kept pestering me about having two wives.
I wanna cry. I can’t believe such a reality is happening in my life.
The door opened again, the maid stood obstructing the front.
“My apologies, Your Majesty, Her Majesty does not wish to..”
“Then I have no choice.”
“Pardon?”
“This is something of significance. I will have to force my way in even if she rejects my presence. Stand aside.”
The maid paled, but complied. The two of us followed behind His Majesty, the expression warped into one of confusion.
“Miss Anne, it’s been a while.”
“Y-Your Highness..”
“Thank you for taking care of mother. I’ll be heading over now.”
“Y-yes.”
Liliath was familiar with this place which to me, felt foreign. Many pictures of Liliath and her elder sister, Valentine were hung up on the wall, sending insinuations into my mind.
The kitchen was located closer to the back, we had to make our way through a number of rooms.
“What do you want?” h
Her hair bunned up using a barrette was as violet as Liliath’s. Her stature wasn’t too big, height a little more than Liliath’s. She was wearing an apron, and you could see the knot dangling behind her.
“Marilyn, I.. no. It’s too late to apologize by this point.. I have..”
“I don’t wish to have this conversa..” she turned around, her speech came to a grinding halt. The still wet knife she held in hand dropped– and stopped just above her feet.
Liliath’s mother.
“I’m back.”
Liliath had caught the knife with magic before it fell.
Marilyn stood there, staring dumbly.
“Mother. I’m.. back,” Liliath took intermittent steps forward to approach her. Marilyn backed herself against the cooking counter. It seems she was making some sort of salad. Just don’t let it fall into the sink.
“It.. can’t be.. how..”
“It’s me, mother..”
“Liliath.. how could you?!”
Their reunion began with a fierce hug as they cried in each other’s arms.
===
The mansion living room was a fancy one. There was a clock on top of the little wooden shelf just above the hearth. Small lanterns made of glass and steel hung on the walls, a number of wooden furniture and the recent books lay on top of the coffee table.
One window was open to allow the fresh night air into the room. The aroma of warm tea wafted in the air.
“Tell me. Where did it begin?”
“That um.. well..”
Marilyn had her elbows supporting the both hands that held against her cheeks. A pair of eyes were glowing, practically glittering.
Akihito on the other hand, though more reserved, couldn’t help but show his excitement.
All it took was a few words from Liliath to repair their relationship.. that’s magical.. or not. I’m sure it’ll still take a while before they can completely mend what was broken.
It should be possible since the interest of conflict, Liliath, was now before their eyes. She came back safe, and even brought back a love interest..
“Initially, Noel and I weren’t compatible for each other,” Liliath began, sipping her tea, “He was a human, I was a demon.”
“And demons only held attraction towards other demons.. go on,” providing the fillers herself, Marilyn urged Liliath to continue.
“I had thought it to be a hopeless endeavor. After all, no other demons existed in Noel’s world,” Liliath paused, placing the cup of tea down, she sought to find the words to express her thoughts, “Then an opportunity came to remove the chasm that lies between us.”
“What happened next?” Marilyn prodded.
“I killed him.”
Their expressions crumbled.
“And such was how we ended up back in this world,” Liliath said with a tired expression.
“Well.. things worked out in the end. I became a demon and am now Liliath’s fiance,” I tried to fix the mood.. Liliath, really?
“I had thought we were officially husband and wife now that we’ve gotten consent from both our parents?”
“Is that how it’s supposed to work?”
“Why do you keep denying it Noel? Do you insist that we hold a marriage ceremony?”
“Oh my, How bold. Akihito-kun, our daughter has grown so much,” Marilyn said with hands over her mouth.
“If it’s a wedding ceremony you want, I can arrange it..”
I crossed my arms in front of me and shook my head vigorously.
“Noel..” Liliath pouted, staring a hole into the side of my face.
“It’s too early.”
“It’s not.”
“It’s as Liliath-chan has said, you two are at the perfect age to get married. Can I ask that you also push for the two to be wed as soon as possible?” Marilyn tugged, begged, Akihito for his answer.
“Why of course.”
“Our daughter’s fiance isn’t in agreement though.”
“Noel-sama. What do you think? Will you take up our offer? For our daughter’s happiness.”
“Really.. It’s.. too early for me..”
“Cultural differences..” Liliath muttered.
“Exactly.”
“Then shouldn’t you comply with the culture of my world?” Liliath said.
“Ugh…”
Having a child with Liliath will come after marriage, that’s for fucking sure. I can’t concede here!
“No, no, no. Sorry, I can’t agree with that. I’ll marry Liliath, definitely, but not now. We’re too young.”
“How old are you?” Marilyn asked.
“16.”
“Liliath should be 14 this year. Isn’t it perfect? I don’t see any issues with age?”
“Marilyn, I think it’s because he grew up in a world similar to those of the heroes.”
“There’s no way I’m passing up this chance to see our lovely daughter in a wedding gown, Marilyn whined.
Was this the behavior of a mother? I don’t know.. there are a lot of different people out there it seems.
“If it’s a photo of Liliath in a wedding dress you want..”
“Noel..” Liliath drawl.
Against Liliath’s warning, I pulled out the Camerawidget and went to the gallery. There’s a stock full of images stored inside.
I may not be all that proactive when it comes to taking photos, but that doesn’t mean Nine and Prune aren’t. We do a bunch of crazy stuff in Bleu’s domain. If I recalled correctly, there was this one time Liliath and I were forced to practice kissing in front of the altar. Bleu acting as the priest, Nine, Prune, Rin and Laura being the spectators.
Nine took a photo of me kissing the bride–
“This one,” I swiped the image over.
“What?!” Marilyn shrilled in excitement at the sight of the photo.
“You’ve already conducted a wedding ceremony? When.. I thought you had requested..” Akihito was utterly confused.
“That was a mock ceremony! I want an actual one to officially decide our status as husband and wife,” Liliath was pretty worked up with the whole wedding ordeal herself. I guess she’s just happy that she got to reunite with her family.
“You’re contradicting yourself there Liliath.”
“I know that..” Liliath gritted her teeth.
“It’s so beautiful.. if only I were there..” Marilyn said with a voice filled with remorse and regret. She looks so pitiful.. it stings my heart.
I can’t forget that Marilyn is my mother-in-law. In that case I..
“If you want, we can do it again.. absolutely not!” what the fuck I’m I saying?!
“We shall do that! I’ll ask permission from Bleu,” Liliath declared.
“Fuck.”
“What vulgar words,” Akihito commented. Oh shit, my good impression was blown.
“Dear,” Marilyn nudged him with her elbow, a prim-proper smile on her face.
Akihito coughed, and proceeded to show me a big bright smile.
I can’t help but feel weirded out by their reaction.
Next time I should take note not to curse out loud in front of royalty.
“Did I mention that Noel has a second wife?”
The king dropped a bomb.
===
In the end I had to call Rin over and introduce her to them. Liliath’s parents didn’t seem to have any problems with the fact that I’m going to have 2 wives. Honestly, that’s just weird. I have a feeling that If it were my real parents, I would receive a vehement scolding.
Ah yep, I better prepare for that. And legal laws too. Might have to find a loophole.. or something.
The condition they had was simply that Liliath becomes my first wife. Like, obviously right?
Well. They were understanding of the fact that Rin is a demon lord. Their own daughter was a demon lord and they had seen her suffer so.. they were empathetic.
In anycase.
“What’s the current situation of the anti-demon lord movement?”
“A heavy topic all of a sudden,” Marilyn blurted.
“Is that what it’s called as seen from the outside? Hm. Our measures to limit the influence of the demon lord Javiel-sama, has proved to show some effect. However, it is incredibly inefficient. I foresee that someday the scale will tip,” Akihito said with a serious face.
“That will now change because of our arrival, is that correct?”
“Correct,” He nodded with a smile, reaching out to pat Liliath’s head.
“What are your plans now that we’re here. We’re not on good terms with that demon lord so if there’s anything we can do to bring him down, we’re here to help.”
“Initially I had thought to make merry and conduct a wedding on a national scale with Noel-sama and my daughter as the centerpiece. That’ll shift the momentum entirely, as such an action would show that it is that we, Toren Kingdom supports the demons, not the Demon Lord Javiel.”
Ugh.. I messed up huh? Though, I’m still not in support of holding such a large wedding.
“Wedding?” Rin cocked her head.
“Yeah. It’s alright, we’ll have ours together altogether when the time is right..”
To my words, Liliath showed a dissatisfied smile. Scary.
I’m not bending.
“If it comes down to it, maybe we should strip Javiel from all his abilities. What do you think, Noel?” Liliath turned to me and asked.
I mean.. that’s the most practical thing we can do. Doing so is equivalent to pulling a gut blow on their side since.. Javiel is their leader.
“How about Valentine-chan? She’s..” Marilyn said.
“We can simply teleport her over can’t we?” Liliath questioned me with her eyes.
“Should we do it now?”
“I believe it’s best we don’t make rash movements. At the moment, The demon lord Javiel-sama doesn’t know you’re here, correct?” Akihito asked.
“About that..”
“He had attempted an ambush. It failed of course.”
“He knows?” Akihito’s expression warped.
“For now, Valentine is safe, I can attest to that.”
For now. I think it’s best to kidnap her back to the castle. She has to stop working inside the demon’s tower. We have no idea what could happen to her.
“Then, I’ll go.”
“No need. Nine, your human trafficker is here at your service.”
“Fuck. I thought you were busy.”
Akihito and Marilyn were taken aback at their sudden appearance.
Nine, a girl with shoulder length black hair stuck her tongue out at me. Nine was originally a boy, but because of a spell, or title known as [Vixen’s Pawn], she has to stay a girl if not she’ll be controlled.
Though.. if Nine took action then doesn't that mean he tuned in to our conversation this entire time? What the hell man, you stalker.
“W-What..” Sitting on the floor beside Nine, a taller girl with black hair and black bags under her eyes muttered in shock.
333.
What has become of me?
This doubt has become apparent, and has been nagging at me since I turned.
Sitting under the shade of a tree out in the palace courtyard, I enjoyed a cup of tea. I recall having played under this exact oak when I was still a child. Being subjected to various experiments and spells, I’m glad to find that it remains strong and healthy.
A petal fell into my tea.
Apparently it had the nerve to disturb my drink.
I observed how the courtyard, which had once been a barren land due to my frequent visit; now a wonderful garden filled with lush plants and decorations.
Small bugs roamed on the ground. They were similar to ants from Noel’s world, but had features that were similar to ticks. Nevertheless, these were of minimal threats.
My childhood was spent grilling their nests.
What fond memories..
Which I remember.
Then..
What did I forget?
What can’t I forget?
What is it that I wish to complete?
My will to live. The reason for my existence.
‘You promised me.’
I did. I promised. I vowed. I made it my life’s purpose.
That I will one day repay the favor. A hundred folds, a thousand folds..
But what would that achieve?
I could rid the world of that damned demon right this instant, it’s amusing how I hesitate to do so.
Noel wouldn’t want it.
He’s not that kind of person.
Forgiving, kind, caring.
Naive, whimsical.
“That’s how I see him.”
What does he see in me?
“Dear sister?”
“Hm?”
I turned to the source of the voice..
“Anee-sama!”
I glomped towards her– she received me with open arms.
“Mwu.. my dear sister. How are you? Enjoy tea all alone by yourself.. how unusual?”
“I'm giving Rin some time to be with Noel alone.”
“Really? Are you sure you’re alright with sharing?” Anee-sama narrowed her eyes at me.
I nodded.
A lot has changed in the past few years. I found it surprising that my height had become subpar to my sisters. My height now reaches the level of her eyes when before this, the bosom.
“Don’t you have work to do?”
Anee-sama works for that demon doesn’t she?
“I’ve decided to take it easy.. forget it. How about we enjoy some tea?”
“One cup of buckwheat tea right away!”
“Buckwheat what?”
“It’s a specialty from where Noel came from.”
“Is it now?”
I took out the sachet from the inventory and prepared a glass of piping hot water.
“Please wait a few minutes.”
“This aroma is.. It’s quite strong.”
I nodded, “It suits my palate. I hope it does yours too.”
“I won’t know until I try?” Anee-sama smiled wryly.
So under the shade, we sat and enjoyed the peaceful morning.
“What did you do at the demon tower?”
I wish I knew if this question stemmed from my curiosity or concern.
“I worked as an admin. Running through piles of paper and having to filter through the data and come up with ideas to resolve issues in the internal affairs of the land of the demons..”
“It must be hell.”
“It was,” anee-sama sighed. She took a sip of the tea which I had dropped a few pieces of ice into, “Worry not. I’ve already made up my mind to quit it for good. I won’t go back, ever.”
“That’s glad to hear. What do you think of the tea?”
“This? Not my favourite, but palatable.”
“I see..”
“I’m sure things will turn out alright.”
“Anee-sama.. I want your honest opinions.”
“What about?”
“That demon.. demon lord Javiel. I’m sure you’ve met him a few times have you not?”
Why I’m I asking this?
Was I considering forgiveness?
Why? Why?
Why forgive him when he had brought so much pain?
Was the pain even real? Or was it but a fickle of a memory implanted in me which made my existence?
“L-Liliath-chan.. I-I’ve never been fond of him. The only reason why I decided to engage in his work is to find you..” she reached out and touched my cheeks. Her black hair swayed, hesitant eyes peered into my own.
“Anee-sama..”
Javiel.. was once a kind nature person himself, wasn’t he? I was the one who played the role of the villain, bringing him to the castle where a try laid therein..
What if..
“I’ve already applied for a position in the Lionheart academy.”
“Lionheart Academy? Why?”
All of a sudden? Anee-sama, I thought you were a princess? If you did that.. isn’t it saying that you’re lowering yourself to the lives of..
Anee-sama showed me a cheeky smiled, she said, “Because you’ll be there too.”
“Me?”
She nodded. “Father’s plan.”
Father’s plan.. I felt nauseous, hearing those words.
“L-Liliath-chan?”
“It’s alright.. I must have drank too much tea,” I smiled bitterly.
“Is that so?”
But of course, it wouldn’t be that easy to fool my anee-sama.
“Now, let’s put that topic aside. There’s still a lot of work underway before I can say anymore. Just be prepared for school. You’ve never attended one yourself, have you? So father thought you should at least try a normal life.”
Yes. Everyone from the royal family has graduated from Lionheart. I’m the only one that hasn’t. Though.. It wasn't that I didn’t have experience of what it’s like to study in a school.
Most unmemorable was how boring it felt.
“I will thank father for that.”
I’m sure, despite there being hidden agendas to his actions.. my father never intended to hurt me.
He never wished to see me suffer.
So then why?
Why did I have to go through all that?
Because of mere misunderstanding?
“Why..”
“W-What’s wrong?”
“I’m back.. yet..”
What was the point of it all? Now that my life has come to this?
Will it happen again? Will I be betrayed again?
Was there anything to be gained to continue pursuing the completion of my existence?
To be finally free from this torment?
Had I been suffering?
Was I ever in torment?
Was there any reason to.. make him suffer?
“What kind of person is he?”
He?
Anee-sama’s words took me out of my thoughts. She must have realized that I had entered into a spiral of thoughts.
“Your fiance. He’s a demon too, isn’t he?”
“Ah.. you mean.. Noel..”
Anee-sama closed the distance, her face was uncomfortably close. Her grin reminded me of Noel’s sister– and to have thrown such a blunt question made my face feel hot.
“Noel.. he.. I just love him.”
“Any particular traits you liked? Or was it love at first sight?”
“Not particularly..”
The first time I ever met Noel, I hadn’t even realized how much of a shamble I was in. If I were to present myself to him in that condition again.. I would roll my head in shame.
“I believe it has more to do with fate.”
After all. I am but a fictional being that became reality.
My memories are merely pieces of some creation. My father, anee-sama, Toren Kingdom, Imagi.. these were all false histories of myself that never existed until they ‘manifested into reality’.
“Oh, that’s a short answer…”
Her tone of voice dropped.
“Anee-sama?”
“Oh, please don’t mind me. I’m just..”
Inscrutable. Her expression remained ever changing in conflict.
“Anee–”
“I’m sorry.”
“...”
“I’m sorry I wasn’t the one who saved you.”
I saw her tears.
“Where was I all those times you were suffering? I can’t believe I continued to pursue the throne, thinking that it could bring you closer to a world where you can still live as normal yet..”
“You did.. nothing wrong, Anee-sama.”
I felt disgusted at the words that came out of my mouth as I recalled the dark elf which had disguised herself as anee-sama.
My family never once had thought of abandoning me.
But their actions did..
Why.. had I ever thought of it in this way?
“Liliath-chan. I’m sorry, send my regards to your fiancé,” she wiped her eyes with her arms and stood up.
“Don’t go..” I reached out my hands
“I’m a failure as you sister..”
Anee-sama ran away, trails of tears left in her wake.
I watched as she disappeared.
As the scene repeated once over in my mind, till now, I still question..
Why hadn’t I the courage to grab her arm?
To stop her?
To.. forgive her?
